According to the Factory Mutual Insurance Co. total lightning losses in
the United States reach approximately $5 billion annually. Where weather
disasters are concerned, lightning is a leading cause of destruction--the
good news is that lightning is the only force of nature for which affordable
and reliable protection is available. Today's homes and businesses are especially vulnerable
to lightning. In addition to causing structural damage, a single bolt
of lightning can wreak havoc with computers, electronic equipment and
appliances.
Eliminate Your Risk
A properly installed lightning protection system that meets U.S. Safety Standards (UL and NFPA)
provides a specified path on which lightning can travel. When a structure is equipped with a
properly installed lightning protection system, the destructive power of the lightning strike is
directed safely into the ground, leaving the building, occupants and contents unharmed. Grounding
is a crucial element of effective lightning protection and must be performed in strict
compliance with codes and standards of the industry. Only experienced lightning protection
specialists who are listed with UL should perform this service--roofers, general contractors and
electricians are not qualified to install lightning protection systems.
